"Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero" Wildflife Reserve
Oasis of Exoticism and Exuberance
The Wildlife Reserve "Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero" is a oasis of exoticism and exuberance with lianas, climbers, and other species that make of this reserve a little jungle. Luxuriance and charming places are what the privileged traveller will discover through the many paths and routes.
The Wildlife Reserve in Castronuño has been declared as a Protected Natural Area in 1992.
The dam has originated one of the most important wetlands in Castile and Leon community. Today, it is an authentic sanctuary for wild fauna.
As the dam was built, an important reedbed surface has been created through the years along the right margin of the Duero river with several and dispersed lakes.
Numerous waterbird species find here one of the last refuges on migrations; spend winter season and, the most important, carry out reproduction.
The presence of several threatened nesting bird species, as it is the case of purple heron or "aguilucho lagunero" increases more the value of this spot.
Tree and bushy species create a jungle filled with poplars, black poplars, ash-trees, brooms, ivies, lianas, willows and climbing plants.
Casa del Parque
La Casa del Parque is the place for public use which belongs to the Castilla y León Natural Spaces Network.
The birwatching observatory is at the ground floor.
There is a camera installed down to see the pool over the river and panels with drawings of the most usual birds in the sanctuary.
There are games to identify warble birds, and others referred to the ecosystem formed by the Duero river.
There is a room where a wooden boat has been placed simulating a trip by the Duero river, to watch a documentary about the sanctuary.
